Vardar Skopje makes major step toward winning Macedonian handball championship title


Vardar overtook Metalurg in the handball championship playoffs table after its confident 38:25 win on Thursday evening. Vardar and Metalurg are even in points, but Vardar has a better goal score, considering that Metalurg won their first match-up with only three goals difference.

Even as there are three more games in the playoffs, this win puts Vardar on track to win the 11th title, third in a row. Metalurg was able to put up resistance only in the first 20 minutes. The result was 5:5 in the 9th minute, and afterwards it was a permanent Vardar lead until the end of the game. Best Metalurg could to was to reduce Vardar’s lead down to two goals in the 21st minute.

Timur Dibirov scored 8 goals for Vardar, followed by Igor Karacic with 7. Arpad Sterbik had 12 saves on the Vardar goal. Metalurg’s best player was Nemanja Obradovic with 8 goals.
