Handball: Macedonia beats Iceland


Macedonia beat Iceland in the home qualifying match for the European Handball Championship. Playing at the packed Boris Trajkovski sports arena, Macedonia ended the game with a five goals difference – 30:25. It was 15:13 at the halftime.

Captain Kiril Lazarov led the team to victory scoring 11 goals, followed by Filip Talevski with 5. “I dedicate this win to the whole of Macedonia”, said the jubilant team captain after the game.

This brings Macedonia to the top of the group with 4 points, even with Ukraine, while Iceland and the Czech Republic have two points each so far. On Sunday Macedonia travels to Iceland and Raul Gonzalez, after his first game at national team coach, said that Macedonia can hope to win in the away game as well.

“It was very difficult, but now we have a realistic chance to advance beyond the group stage. We expect a hard away match but the pressure will be on the Icelandic team”, said Gonzalez.
