Gevgelija high school film-makers win award in New York with portrayal of refugee drama

“Borders”, a film shot by six high school students from Gevgelija during the height of the 2015-2016 migrant crisis, won two awards at the Plural+ international youth film festival in New York.

The film won the awards for a Balkan film and the Scalabrini award, in the category of youth film-makers between 13 and 17 years of age. Made in English, he film covers the problems of children that were caught up in the unprecedented migrant wave.

“Gevgelija was flooded by refugees and we witnessed dramatic scenes each day. The children – refugees were not spared. As a team, our idea was to shot that children are not responsible for the situations created by the adults, and we wanted to portray their plight with a few simple scenes which we put into a movie”, said professor Toni Avramov.

Supported by the United Nations’ Alliance of Civilizations and the International Organization for Migration, the Gevgelija team will have a chance to participate in an international project planned for 2017.
