The Liberation of Skopje to Represent Macedonia in the Oscar Race


Macedonian/Croatian/Finnish coproduction The Liberation of Skopje by Rade and Danilo Å erbedžija has been selected as Macedonia’s entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 89th Academy Awards.

The Liberation of Skopje is a drama set during WW II, seen through the eyes of 10 year-old Zoran. Along with Rade Šerbedžija, the film also stars Mikko Nousiainen from Finland, as well as Lucija Šerbedžija, Silvija Stojanovska and David Todosovski.

The Liberation of Skopje by Danilo and Rade SerbedzijaThe film was produced by Robert Naskov, Gorjan Tozija, Igor A. Nola, Vladimir Anastasov, Arto Halonen and Danilo Šerbedžija, and the coproducers are Macedonia's Partysans, Croatia's Lijeni Film and MP Film Production and Finland's Art Films. The film was supported by Eurimages and the Croatian Audiovisual Centre.

The Liberation of Skopje premiered at the 2016 Pula Film Festival. The Macedonian premiere is set for 1 October 2016, followed by cinema distribution in Croatia and Finland.

According to a a press release issued by HAVC, along with The Liberation of Skopje, a series of Croatian coproductions are on the list of candidates for an Oscar nomination in the Best Foreign Film category. Directly or indirectly, Croatia has eight candidates in this year’s Best Foreign Film category.
